Shire Meeting Minutes, August 2009

Attending: Aran, Sabas, Rhieinwen, Umberto, Thomasina, Catherine, Richard, Mayken, Ada, Wilhelm

Meeting started: 7:06 p.m.

Officers

A&S. Albra said summer schedules have wreaked havoc with various guild meetings; see below for updates. She reminded everyone about Collegium in Lyondemere (September), classes at Great Western War (October), and Carreg Wen’s Academia (November).

Chatelaine. Aran has six Known World Handbooks that belong to the Shire at his apartment. There is a new Chatelaine handbook on the Caid website. He submitted a proposal to teach a Chatelaine class at GWW.

Chronicler. Rhieinwen said the August Oak Leaf was uploaded several days ago. She has no receipts because she hasn’t mailed any issues yet. She would love to see more submissions and suggestions for what people want to see in the newsletter. (She also knows her words just fell into a black void.)

Constable. Ismay was not present and sent no report. Sabas said he has the Constable box and will get it to Ismay.

Exchequer. Mattea was out of town but sent a report. Her computer crashed, taking the April through June 2009 financials with it. She did a backup in April and has print copies as well. She will provide Catherine with correct figures and the Qtr 3 report before the end of the month.

Herald. We need a herald!

Lists. Thomasina said she had nothing to do, but she found the lists from the Equestrian Championship at Pirate-versary.

Marshal. Wilhelm was not present but sent a report. There haven’t been any events. Fighter practices continue, although there hasn’t been a lot of heavy activity.

Quartermaster. Rhieinwen said there was nothing new to report.

Seneschal. Catherine said she will be taking the Seneschal, Exchequer, and contracts classes at Collegium. Rhieinwen posted a message about GWW A&S events to the Shire list. If you need a deputy, let Catherine know. Per SCA Inc.: If you have a bad address and your Crown Prints gets returned, your membership will be put on hold!

Webwright. Wilhelm was not present but sent a report. He has updated the regnum but still has some more changes to make in it.

Youth Officer. Mayken said there have been no events so she had no report. She is looking for a deputy.

Guilds

Textiles Guild. Albra said all August workshops will be held at Mathom Grange.

Brewers Guild. Wilhelm was not present but sent a report. Five people attended last month, which is a good turnout. Next week’s meeting will be at Kuzmina and Tom’s, where more cordials will be made. If anyone is interested in the next Kingdom Brewer’s Guild meeting, it’s this Sunday—contact Aran for information.

Herbal Guild. Morgana was not present and had no report.

Scribes Guild. Albra said the guild got off to a great start in June, with guest scribe Baroness Tetchubah teaching a basic getting-started class. While we may not always have guest teachers, we will be continuing workshops on the fourth Thursday of the month. Some folks are participating in a Scribal Challenge (see the article in the September 2009 Oak Leaf).

Woodworking Guild. Luzia was not present and sent no report. You can call her to make an appointment.

Old Business

How to Split Our Events. The Shire voted to hold three events: Black Oak Lodge, Anniversary plus Darach Equestrian and Altavian Equestrian Championships, and Pirate Tournament.

New Business

2010 Calendar Dates. Black Oak Lodge: first choice Mar 19–21; second choice Mar 26–28. Anniversary: first choice May 15; second choice May 8; third choice May 22. Pirate Tourney: first choice July 17; second choice July 24. We need an Event Steward for Anniversary.

Shire Eric Use. Odeane has asked to use the Shire eric for a non-SCA unarmored combat demo at the Renaissance Faire in Irvine, about 10 stakes with ropes, on Saturday, August 8. The Shire voted to allow it, with two caveats: (1) This was not setting a precedence for loaning out Shire equipment for non-SCA use, and (2) Wilhelm will be responsible for the eric the entire time.

GWW Land Allocation. We can register the Darach pavilion under a person’s name and be given land for it. We voted to do this and use Shire funds ($40 or $45).

Upcoming Events

Great Western War. We have 18 people registered to camp with us as of today. Kelvin will be putting the sign-up list on the Darach Yahoogroup and it will also be posted in the Shire pavilion on site. Remember: After you’ve cleaned the shower truck, you can take a shower in a nice clean truck! Volunteer! We’ve routinely been in the top 3 for volunteer hours—let’s win it this year, Darach! Woo!

Black Oak Lodge 2010. Neither of the stewards were present. Rhieinwen reminded everyone that she’ll be teaching a How to Steward class in September—if you want to attend, please let her know.

Caid Wiki Pages. Aran is willing to update people’s pages.
