Shire Meeting Minutes, July 2009

Attending: Rhieinwen, Aran, Catherine, Thomasina, Ismay, Albra, Lariij, Alexander, Alia, Richard, Elizabeth, Mattea, Wilhelm, Ada

Meeting started: 7:00 p.m.

Officers

A&S. Albra said the first Scribal workshop went really well. Mistress Tetchubah was here to teach. It looks as though there’s enough interest to continue the workshops on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Chatelaine. Aran turned in his quarterly report and the Camarillo Celtic Faire demo report. Anyone wanting to be a Chatelaine-at-Large needs to take the class at Collegium; the Kingdom has lost some files so even if you were warranted previously, you should re-take the class and get re-warranted.

Chronicler. Rhieinwen thanked Aran for submitting an article about developing your persona. She noted that July’s issue contains a quiz, and you can win a spiffy prize!

Constable. Ismay is our new Constable as of July 1. Huzzah, Ismay!

Exchequer. Mattea said we have $8,228.90, not including the post-Pirate-versary deposit, which was about $1,255.00. The second quarter just ended and she will report on that next month.

Herald. We need a herald!

Lists. Thomasina had no report.

Marshal. Wilhelm said we’re still having fighter practice, although he wasn’t there this past Sunday. He still needs to submit the report for Pirate-versary.

Quartermaster. Rhieinwen had nothing to report.

Seneschal. Catherine thanked Elizabeth again for her excellent job. If you need to get a warrant updated, get it to Catherine as soon as possible. Many offices need deputies, and we still need a Herald.

Webwright. Wilhelm had no report. Elizabeth asked him to remove her as administrator from the Yahoogroups list and to add Catherine.

Youth Officer. Mayken was not present and sent a report that she had no report.

Guilds

Textiles Guild. Albra said Textiles are continuing as usual. The first and third Tuesdays workshops in July are at WitsEnd, and possible the second and fourth will be as well (as Morgana will be out of town). Contact Albra to confirm.

Brewers Guild. Wilhelm said the Guild will have a meeting next week somewhere. Aran noted there is a kosher winery in Oxnard: Herzog Wineries. They offer a free self-guided tour and a $10 guided tour with tastings; their restaurant is pricy but very good.

Herbal Guild. Morgana said the last meeting was held on June 18 with seven people attending. They are holding an herbal vinegars–making workshop July 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the House at WitsEnd. (If you add borage to vinegar, it turns blue!) There will be no regular meeting in July because Morgana will be out of town, but meetings will resume in August. Ismay said the Huntington is doing a perfumery workshop on July 18, $100 per person.

Woodworking Guild. Luzia was not present, but sent a note that the guild is still on hiatus, but call if you want to coordinate a time to work on a project.

Old Business

Pirate-versary and Darach/Altavia Equestrian Championship. Elizabeth noted that we agreed to give 25% of the proceeds to Altavia; that needs to be handled.

New Business

Bids for Black Oak Lodge 2010. No formal bids were submitted, but Dame Ismay suggested a theme: “Black Oak Lodge: Crossroads in Time.” Bring your persona—this is a chance for the Viking to sit with the Tudor. She can’t commit being the steward due to health, but if somebody would like to be part of a stewarding team, that would be great. Eogan is already interested in rapier and Jamal is considering doing the feast. Aran can teach his persona classes. Alia and Mattea agreed to be stewards-in-training and Rhieinwen offered to assist. Rhieinwen suggested people be encouraged, in the months prior to the event, to do some new research on their personas and then discuss what they learned at the event.

Pirate-versary. The Shire discussed whether it worked or not, and most felt it worked well. Rhieinwen suggested we continue to combine the two events but move it later in the year (July, when we would normally have Pirate Tourney) to spread it out from Black Oak Lodge. Morgana said it would also be good to split out the Equestrian Championship but still combine Equestrian with Altavia’s Equestrian Championship. Alexander felt the pirate theme doesn’t work well for the Rapier Championship. Ismay suggested having the rapier championship at Black Oak Lodge. Wilhelm suggested we run a list at Equestrian Championship to get the fighters there. We will discuss this more—think about it and come to the August meeting with your thoughts.

Upcoming Events

Great Western War (October 7–12). Ismay said land allocation has gone live. If you don’t pre-register and ask to be included in Darach’s encampment, our space will get smaller, because A&S is going to be behind us. Wilhelm said Highland War is coming up at the beginning of September. Does Darach want to set up a campsite?

Meeting finished: 7:45 p.m.
