Shire Meeting Minutes, May 2009

Attending: Rhieinwen, Elizabeth, Arabella, Mayken, Alexander, Morgana, Alia, Catherine, Thomasina, Mattea

Meeting started: 7:10 p.m.

Officers

A&S. Albra was not present but sent a report. Their Highnesses are requesting contributions to the Kingdom Travel Fund, gas cards, cords in Her Highness’ colors of green and burgundy, and largesse bracelets with blue, gold, and silver beads or green and burgundy beads. The Kingdom has a great deal of Regalia, so if you want to make something, contact the Keeper of the Regalia and the Secretary for the Order of the Rose to coordinate. There are always ongoing projects to refurbish or replace items and volunteers are welcome. Since our last meeting, Kingdom Pentathlon was held. It’s a great opportunity to not only win recognition for one’s work, but to learn from others in your interest area or be inspired in a new and different field. She thanked Lady Ada for making copies of the new Kingdom template for scrolls, and noted that the All Things Scribal workshop date was changed to April 19. Please come and try your hand at scribal activities, as the Kingdom needs scrolls. Contact her if you’re interested in a foray to the June Gem & Mineral Show in Santa Monica.

Chatelaine. Aran was not present but sent a report. The box of Back in Time and media handouts has been delivered to the Shire shed and he hopes someone can make sure it is taken to Pirate-versary.

Chronicler. Rhieinwen mailed 6 copies of the April issue and will be mailing 4 copies of the May issue. She spent $7.07 on printing the May issue. She begs on bended knee for ideas for Darach History column.

Constable. William was not present but sent a report that there was nothing to report. Alexander said he left his leather-covered bottle at Pentathlon and did tell the Constable at Pentathlon.

Exchequer. Mattea was late, but Alia said because she has been writing lots of checks tonight, she has no details on the bank balance. Mattea reported that we had a modest profit in Q1 of $133.71. The profit from Black Oak Lodge is about $90. The ending ledger balance is $8808.59 but the actual balance is $8902.59 due to outstanding checks.

Herald. We need a herald!

Lists. Thomasina said we had a nice costumed fighter practice at the Camarillo Celtic Faire demo. We had nine rapier fighters and Don Alexander won. We had only two heavy fighters so there were no heavy lists.

Marshal. Wilhelm was not present but sent a report. He has been unable to attend Sunday practices or the Camarillo Celtic Faire demo. Sunday practices will continue as usual except for the last two weekends of May. Aran sent a report that there is a new combined authorization form dated 4/22/09 that authorizing marshals must use. Also, by a new ruling from the Society Marshal, minors must be marked in a Kingdom-specific manner.

Quartermaster. Rhieinwen said Aran got stuff out of the shed for the demo and returned it all.

Seneschal. Elizabeth said the Shire PO Box has been a big giant [expletive deleted]. She got the form and the check and everything, and gave them all the info, but she can’t get it because she’s not authorized by the SCA to open a PO Box. We voted to allow the Seneschal to get mail at her house rather than a PO box as long as SCA Inc. doesn’t have a problem with it. The Exchequer will receive bank statements at her house.

Webwright. Wilhelm was not present but sent a report. He has not yet contact Griffin about assistance with updating the website. He has received three new updates that have not been implemented.

Youth Officer. Mayken said we have an event coming up and if anyone wants to help with Youth Activities, contact her. She is looking for a deputy.

Guilds

Textiles Guild. Albra sent a report that workshops continue at the usual locations.

Brewers Guild. Wilhelm was not present but sent a report. Five people attended the April meeting, where they tasted some earlier projects, some of which survived better than expected (2+-year-old beer was very drinkable but past its prime). The next meeting will be on May 14 in South Oxnard. Mattea noted that she and Robey hosted a meeting where they continued to work on cinnamon cordial.

Herbal Guild. Morgana said the last meeting on April 16 was cancelled. May 21 is the next meeting and they will be working on herbal vinegars.

Woodworking Guild. Luzia was not present and did not send a report.

Old Business

Camarillo Celtic Faire Demo. Aran was not present but sent a report. He and Sir Eronric authorized one new heavy weapons fighter (who had been authorized in another Kingdom).

Lanterns. Alexander delivered the lantern and post to Their Majesties but the Royal Trailer didn’t have room for them, so they went home in Their personal vehicle.

New Business

Coronation Presentation. Albra noted in her report what is needed. We voted to adopt a sloth for Sven and Kolfinna for our Stepping Down presentation at Coronation. We are accepted donations from Shire members. We voted to donate money to the Kingdom travel fund however we can; i.e., if it’s okay to give from the Shire coffers, we will. The check will be written at the June meeting and we will vote on the amount then. Elizabeth will compile all Coronation donations; please bring them to the June meeting.

Equestrian Practice. Arabella said they are moving to Thousand Oaks, probably every Friday night. Virginia is the contact person, not Arabella.

Upcoming Events

Pirate-versary/Altavia-Darach Equestrian Championship (May 30). Catherine has offered to run the lunchbox auction. Arabella and her minions are running all the Equestrian activities. We agreed to offer Altavia ¼ of what’s taken in at Gate (since it’s three of our events combined with one of theirs). Albra will be running a People’s Prize A&S Display. Mattea suggested we have an after-dinner at the Wok-n-South Mongolian BBQ in Thousand Oaks.

Black Oak Lodge 2010. It’s not too early to start thinking about this event! We are open for bids.
